Trekking & Mountaineering in Uttarakhand in 2027 with Adventhrill

If 2027 is the year you take your trekking to the next level, Uttarakhand is the place to plan it. Its trails run from open alpine meadows to glacier basins and technical summits, so you can build from a first multi-day trek to a 6,000 m peak without leaving the state. Our home base is Dehradun, and we run treks and expeditions across Garhwal for people at every stage of that journey.

This guide covers the Uttarakhand treks and expeditions we run, how they compare, which months suit each one, and how to plan your 2027 season, whether that is one trek or a full step-by-step progression to a peak.

offers more trekking months than most of the Himalaya.

Why trek in Uttarakhand?

Uttarakhand is the birthplace region of the Ganga and Yamuna, and it is home to Nanda Devi, the highest peak that lies entirely within India. Most of the state is mountainous and forested, and its trails have been walked for generations by shepherds, traders and pilgrims. Today the same routes lead trekkers through oak and rhododendron forests, high alpine meadows, glacial lakes and snowy ridgelines.

The state also offers more trekking months than most of the Himalaya. You can walk through snow-covered meadows in winter, flowering slopes in spring, green valleys in early summer and golden grasslands after the monsoon. For climbers, Garhwal adds glaciated peaks that make a natural next step after trekking.

Expeditions in Uttarakhand with Adventhrill

1. Mt. Rudragaira Peak Expedition

•        Base: Sankri

•        Grade: Challenging

•        Terrain: Glacier, ice wall, summit ridge

How to progress from trek to peak

A sensible path through Uttarakhand looks like this:

1.       Start with Dayara Bugyal or Surya Top. Build comfort with multi-day walking and camping up to about 4,000 m.

2.       Move to Kedar Tal or Bagini Glacier. Longer days and higher camps up to about 4,900 m teach you how your body handles altitude.

3.       Step up to Mt. Rudragaira. Your first technical peak, with glacier travel and ridge climbing.

4.       Aim for Mt. Black Peak. A longer, more demanding climb above 6,000 m.

Each step builds the experience the next one needs.

Planning your 2027 season

Trek

Best months

Dayara Bugyal

Feb, Mar, Apr, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec

Kedar Tal

May, Jun, Sep, Oct, Nov

Bagini Glacier

May, Jun, Oct, Nov

Both Uttarakhand expeditions run in summer and autumn. Across Adventhrill's treks, March to May and September to November are the peak seasons. Plan around these windows, and confirm exact 2027 departure dates with our team before you book flights or leave.

Suggested 2027 pathways

•        First Himalayan trek: Dayara Bugyal in spring (March to April) or autumn (September to November).

•        Stepping up: Kedar Tal in May to June or September to November, or Bagini Glacier in May to June or October to November.

•        First peak: Mt. Rudragaira in the summer or autumn window.

•        Big goal: Mt. Black Peak in the summer or autumn window.

•        A two-season plan: do a spring trek to build your base, then return in autumn for the next step up. For example, Dayara Bugyal in spring, then Kedar Tal or Bagini Glacier in autumn.

Starting preparation early matters, especially for the expeditions. Build your fitness through the months before your chosen window rather than in the last few weeks.

A good 2027 plan starts with the right route, season and preparation.

What to expect on a trek in Uttarakhand

Every trail has its own rhythm, but a few things hold true across the state.

Weather

Mountain weather can change within a day. Mornings are often clear and sunny, afternoons can bring cloud, and nights drop quickly in temperature, especially at higher camps. Winter brings snow and freezing nights, and the monsoon brings rain and mist. Spring and autumn are usually the most balanced. Always carry layers.

Trail conditions

One day you may walk through oak and rhododendron forest, the next across open meadows, ridgelines or rocky moraine. Expect steady ascents, rolling ridges and rocky descents. In snow, you may need microspikes and gaiters. After the monsoon, expect stream crossings and muddy sections.

Campsites

Campsites range from forest clearings to wide meadows and spots beside glacial lakes. Facilities are basic: tents, sleeping bags and toilet tents. The remoteness is part of the experience, with starry skies and very little light pollution.

The challenge

A trek here is a physical and mental test. Steep climbs test your stamina, altitude tests your breathing, and the weather tests your patience. Beginner treks like Dayara Bugyal are forgiving, while Kedar Tal, Bagini Glacier and the expeditions need more fitness, preparation and experience.

Safety on the mountain

High altitude demands respect. On our trips this means gradual acclimatisation, daily monitoring for altitude sickness, experienced guides, emergency oxygen and first-aid support, and weather-led decisions on summit days. Buffer days are built into the expeditions so the team is never forced to push through poor conditions.

People. Your trek or expedition is led by experienced mountain guides and expedition leaders who make daily decisions on pace, route and weather. Our expedition leaders are technically trained for glacier and summit terrain.

Processes. Altitude gain is gradual, with acclimatisation built into every itinerary. Participants are monitored daily for signs of altitude sickness, and anyone who develops serious symptoms is brought down. Summit attempts happen only in stable weather.

Equipment. Teams carry first-aid supplies and emergency oxygen. On the expeditions, technical equipment such as ropes and rescue gear is organised for the climb. Ask our team for the exact equipment list for your chosen trip.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners trek in Uttarakhand? Yes. Dayara Bugyal and Surya Top are rated Easy to Moderate and are a good first Himalayan trek.

Do I need experience for an expedition? Prior high-altitude trekking is strongly recommended. Rudragaira is the more approachable of our two Uttarakhand peaks.

Which should be my first peak? Mt. Rudragaira. It introduces glacier travel and ridge climbing, and leads to harder routes later.

When should I plan my 2027 trip? March to May and September to November are the most reliable windows, and the expeditions run in summer and autumn. Pick your month from the table above, then confirm the 2027 dates with our team.

Can I go on a private departure? Yes. Contact our team to plan a tailored ascent.

Can I trek solo? Many people join our group departures on their own and meet the team and other trekkers at the start. For remote high-altitude routes such as Bagini Glacier and for the expeditions, always go with an experienced guide.

What should I pack? The basics are well-fitting waterproof trekking boots, three or four warm layers, a waterproof jacket, quick-dry trekking pants, a headlamp, sunglasses, sun protection, a water bottle and a personal first-aid kit. For snowy or higher trips, add thermals, insulated gloves, gaiters and a warm cap. Our team shares a full gear list for your specific trip.

How should I prepare physically? Build cardio with jogging, cycling or stair climbing, strengthen your legs and core, and practise walking with a loaded backpack. Start several weeks before your trip, and for the expeditions start several months before.

What is the most demanding trip in Uttarakhand? Mt. Black Peak is our most demanding Uttarakhand objective, graded Challenging. Among the treks, Bagini Glacier and Kedar Tal ask the most from your endurance.
