After a decade spent scaling peaks, if I had to distill the experience into a single thought, it would be this: “We cannot lower the mountain, so we must elevate ourselves.”

Like the man who first spoke those words, Todd Skinner, I found myself drawn away from the conventional path. After earning a degree in finance, Skinner decided to “take a little while off to climb” and never returned. In much the same way, once I had experienced what it meant to pit human potential against nature’s most daunting challenges, I could no longer find my way back to the world of corporate banking. I had discovered that I was meant not to conquer nature, but to work with it.

Here, I share a few insights from a decade spent building, leading, and living this journey..

Building from ZERO - The bootstrap journey

I owe much of my journey to determination and the willingness to simply begin far more than to any formal training in business planning or management.

I started when the calling was strong, without waiting to secure investors or assemble a large team. I invested my own money, which meant operating within a limited budget, and built the business incrementally rather than pursuing a big-bang approach.

Building from zero, and relying primarily on my own resources, taught me the true meaning of ownership, financial discipline, and resourcefulness. 

It also reinforced an important lesson - progress does not always require abundant resources. Often, it begins with the courage to take the first step and the discipline to keep moving forward.

Operations & Quality - The building blocks behind the adventure

I realized early on that there is no substitute for being on the front lines. I made it a priority to be in the mountains alongside my clients, ensuring that the experience consistently lived up to the promise.

In the early days of the business, this hands-on approach gave me a comprehensive understanding of every aspect of the operation. My responsibilities ran the gamut from coordinating staff and managing local logistics to overseeing equipment, arranging transportation, and resolving last-minute challenges.

I learned that in adventure tourism, the product is not the website. It is the expertise, credibility, and attention to detail that together create trust—and ultimately, an experience that clients value and remember.

Relationship Capital — Trust before Transaction

This is one of the lessons closest to my heart. In adventure tourism, relationships are not a peripheral asset, they are the foundation on which everything else is built.

The value of a trusted network cannot be overstated, particularly when operating in remote and unpredictable environments. Over the years, I made it a priority to cultivate deep, respectful, and mutually fair relationships with local mountain teams, guides, corporate organizations, schools, and other institutions that believed in our vision and chose to work with us.

In the mountains, plans can change quickly. Weather conditions can shift, logistics can unravel, and unexpected challenges can arise with little warning. It was during these moments that the true value of relationship capital became most apparent. People went out of their way to help. Not simply because of a contract or a commercial obligation, but because of the trust and goodwill we had built together.

In the long run, the strength of a business is reflected not only in what it delivers, but also in the quality of the relationships it leaves behind.

Crisis Management & Resilience — Surviving COVID

COVID was never simply an interruption in this story; it was a test of resilience. When travel came to a standstill, stopping was never an option, only finding another way to keep the community alive. We turned to virtual marathons, fitness events, and online engagement to keep the spirit of adventure alive even when the trails were closed. But I felt a deeper need to prove that the brand's zeal hadn't faltered, which carried me through two solo cycling expeditions, one from Dehradun to Spiti, another from Dehradun to Kanyakumari, undertaken as a personal reaffirmation of everything Adventhrill stood for. In the end, crisis doesn't test whether you can protect a business model; it tests whether you can hold on to purpose when the model disappears.

Safety over scale - We get there, just not at any cost

Safety has always been the foundation of every trek and expedition we organise at Adventhrill. Each journey deserves thoughtful preparation, skilled leadership, and deep respect for the risks and rhythms of the natural world and this is the same message that goes out to any crew that I pick to assist in our journeys.

Every journey is led by certified, technically trained expedition leaders who understand both the terrain and the risks of high-altitude travel. We follow structured safety protocols and international standards, with careful planning for altitude-related risks, emergencies, communication, and first aid.

Our teams also carry essential equipment, including medical kits and walkie-talkies, particularly in remote areas where mobile connectivity may be unavailable.

As a growing business keen to scale, it may be a message one needs to remind oneself constantly that it is non-negotiable to choose preparedness over haste, and ensure that every participant is guided with competence, humility, and respect.

For me, success is not measured by how many people we take to the mountains, but by how responsibly we lead them there and ensure that everyone returns safely.

Beyond Adventure - Moving people and communities forward

I believe adventure should serve a purpose beyond recreation or commercial success. A passion for endurance and a deep connection with nature should encourage us to look beyond fitness alone and to become more aware of our role in, and contribution to the society and our community.

Which is why our community initiatives have always held a special place for me. Through these we create opportunities for people to grow, compete, and discover their potential.

Adventhrill organizes mountain bike races that encourage technical skill, discipline, healthy competition, and a deeper appreciation for the sport.

Through our outdoor learning programs, I use Himalayan treks and challenging terrain as living classrooms where young people develop resilience, sound judgment, teamwork, and leadership.

I ensure ongoing support to initiatives such as blind football and programs for young athletes, helping make sporting opportunities more inclusive and accessible.

For me, these efforts reflect Adventhrill’s belief in “Adventure with Purpose”, using outdoor learning and endurance sports to strengthen individuals, support communities, and inspire the next generation. The Journey with Adventhrill has made this Decade of climbing memorable then dreams.
