Roopkund Trek Reopened: Exploring the Mysteries of Uttarakhand’s Skeleton Lake Adventures

After years of waiting, one of the most legendary high-altitude trekking routes in Uttarakhand is back in the spotlight.

The Roopkund Trek is open again.

Known around the world as the Skeleton Lake Trek or Mystery Lake Trek, Roopkund is not simply another Himalayan trail. It is a journey through ancient forests, vast alpine meadows, dramatic ridgelines and high-altitude terrain leading to the mysterious Roopkund Lake in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

Recent reports following the July 2026 Supreme Court modification of earlier Bugyal restrictions indicate that trekking and overnight stays can resume under applicable regulations. However, trekkers must still follow permits, Forest Department requirements, environmental rules and local instructions.

For adventure seekers who have been waiting to experience this legendary Himalayan route, Roopkund Trek 2026 could be the perfect time to return to the mountains.

The Story Behind Roopkund: The Mystery of Skeleton Lake

High in the Garhwal Himalayas lies Roopkund Lake, a remote glacial lake surrounded by snow-covered mountains.

The lake is famous because human skeletal remains have been discovered around and beneath its waters. This extraordinary discovery gave Roopkund its famous names:

Skeleton Lake.Mystery Lake.Roopkund Jheel.

The mystery surrounding these remains has attracted historians, scientists, photographers, mountaineers and trekkers for decades.

Scientific research has suggested that the remains represent people who died in different events and periods, rather than one simple historical incident. One of the most widely discussed explanations involves an extreme weather event, including severe hail, that may have caused deaths among people travelling through the region.

But Roopkund is much more than its mystery.

The journey to the lake takes trekkers through some of the most spectacular landscapes of the Indian Himalayas—dense oak and rhododendron forests, enormous alpine meadows, snowfields, rocky high-altitude terrain and breathtaking views of Himalayan giants such as Mt. Trishul and Nanda Ghunti.

That combination of history, mystery, mythology and raw Himalayan terrain is what makes the Roopkund Trek one of India's most fascinating high-altitude treks.

Why Roopkund Trek Is Different

Many Himalayan treks offer beautiful landscapes.

Roopkund offers a story.

The trail gradually transforms as you gain altitude.

You begin around Lohajung, moving through Himalayan villages and forests. The landscape then opens into the spectacular Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal, before becoming increasingly rugged as you approach the higher camps.

Eventually, the green meadows disappear and the landscape becomes colder, steeper and more alpine.

The final approach toward Roopkund is where the character of the trek changes completely.

At around 4,800 metres / 15,750 feet, the air is thin, the terrain is demanding and weather conditions can change quickly. The lake itself sits amid an extraordinary Himalayan amphitheatre, making the final approach one of the most memorable sections of the journey.

Roopkund Trek Difficulty Level

Difficulty: Moderate to Difficult / Challenging

The Roopkund Trek is not a beginner-level Himalayan trek.

Depending on the route, weather and operating conditions, the trek involves approximately 45–55 km of walking and reaches around 15,750 feet / 4,800 metres.

The major challenges include:

  • High altitude

  • Long trekking days

  • Steep ascents and descents

  • Rocky and uneven terrain

  • Cold temperatures

  • Possible snow on higher sections

  • Rapidly changing Himalayan weather

  • Reduced oxygen at higher elevations

  • Sustained physical endurance

The biggest challenge is not simply the distance.

It is the combination of altitude, terrain and consecutive days of trekking.

Trekkers should therefore prepare well before attempting Roopkund

Who Should Do the Roopkund Trek?

Roopkund is best suited for:

  • Fit and physically active trekkers

  • People with previous Himalayan trekking experience

  • Trekkers comfortable with long walking days

  • Adventure seekers looking for a high-altitude challenge

  • People who have already completed moderate Himalayan treks

If you are a first-time trekker, it is better to build experience through moderate treks before attempting Roopkund.

Best Time for Roopkund Trek

Traditionally, May–June and September–October are considered the most suitable periods for the Roopkund region, with conditions varying significantly by year and altitude.

For the newly reopened route, however, the best departure dates should be decided only after checking current trail conditions, permits and local regulations.

At AdvenThrill, departure planning should always prioritize mountain safety over fixed schedules.
